People with an addiction do not have control over what they are doing,
taking or using. Their addiction may reach a point at which it is
harmful. Addictions do not only include physical things we consume, such
as drugs or alcohol, but may include virtually anything, such abstract
things as gambling to seemingly harmless products, such as chocolate -
in other words, addiction may refer to a substance dependence (e.g. drug addiction) or behavioral addiction (e.g. gambling addiction).
Addiction to drugs, food, shopping, social networks, etc..etc. People everyday are experiencing a type of addiction; however regardless of what the addiction may be, the seriousness to this is that an addiction to something exists.
The most typical addiction problem that we see out there is the addiction to drugs. Yes, drug addiction constitutes the most common addiction in the world. The worst part of it is that people die everyday from this and children not only adults take part of this.
Addiction to food is another harmful thing because this is slowly killing people. We are facing the problem of obesity and nowadays people take their health for granted and indulge in all the fast food eating that it can eventually become a habit that at one point you don't see the addiction that you are facing.
Who doesn't love to shop, play video games or like to check their Facebook or Twitter? I cant lie and say that i don't enjoy this things, because i do, however i don't consider myself addicted to any of these things.
So next time have a reality check and see if you consider yourself addicted to any of these things.
I liked your post, I'm pretty sure everyone knows its very easy to get an addiction to anything and everything. However, an addict won't know they are addicted until someone voices it, in which they deny it, and once it completely consumes them to the point of no return do they realize they have a serious problems. So saying in that last line that we need to get a reality check to see if we are addicted to something will have some real bias answers, people don't self evaluate themselves for a reason, because they'll think nothing is wrong. An addiction breaks people socially, mentally and physically. Though food is NOT a technically a drug, once someone gets addicted to eating it becomes one. Internet, working out at the gym, collecting things, money, sex, t.v, games, can all turn into a drug (not the substance) but a drug once they reach the point that they cannot and will not live without that thing they so desperately want.
ReplyDeleteWell all of those become a behavioral addiction they dont necessarily become a drug. But it is like a drug that you cant live without because whatever you get addicted to becomes a crave that you want to feed to make you satisfied. Yeah i get that we dont see what we may be addicted to, but when someone points it out to us we should really listen and pay attention to.
DeleteVery well said Karla, I enjoyed reading your post. I like how you discussed the difference on substance abuse and behavioral addiction. Many people focus on drugs being an addiction, which it is and is extremely bad, but we also forget to focus on the other things we crave like you mentioned gambling, internet, food, etc. Self evaluating is key here. We need to examine our self to see if we have some sort of addiction. I must say...FACEBOOK, gulity as charged!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes many people face addictions and they are not necessarily drug addictions. People have to know that anything can be an addiction if you turn it into one and that there is a difference between substance and behavioral addiction.
DeleteIt's scary how, if you really pay attention, a lot of people could be considered addicts. The only thing is that, if you express your concern, either they get pissed off or they laugh about it. There's no easy way to bring up an issue like this to people ad it sucks because sometimes it's a person you care a lot about and you're essentially watching them die. I know interventions are supposed to be a good way of conveying this to someone, but I've never taken part in one. Actually, I don't know anyone who has...
